Esquires Coffee Supports Fairtrade Fortnight

This Fairtrade Fortnight Esquires Coffee speaks to Barney Smyth of the Fairtrade Foundation to find out why you should be putting Fairtrade in your break this fortnight.

Join Esquires by putting Fairtrade in your break
Between the 27th February and 12th March, we are going to be celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight; the fun-filled highlight of the year, when campaigners, businesses, schools and places of worship show their support for the farmers and workers who grow our food in developing countries.

This year, we’re addressing the challenges that are still apparent in a number of supply chains, whereby the food on our tables, the drinks in our mugs, comes from hard-working farmers all over the world, many of whom don’t get a decent price for their goods, and are trapped in a system which is rips them off.

In reality, life for a coffee farmer is incredibly difficult and they are reaching crisis point. In some African coffee growing regions, one in three people live in poverty, with international coffee prices not even covering the costs of production. Additionally, we are seeing other factors making coffee farming less desirable; rising global temperatures and altered rainfall patterns are affecting coffee yields, quality, pests and diseases are badly affecting the economic security, health and well-being of farmers. They have little capacity to adapt to a hotter world in which climate and market volatility conspire against them.

However, Esquires Coffee are acting as part of the solution by offering delicious Fairtrade certified coffee. When Esquires buy Fairtrade coffee, they pay a Minimum Price to producers selling their products, which acts as a safety net when market prices drop. In addition to the Minimum Price, a Fairtrade Premium is paid – an extra sum of money that farmers and workers invest in business or community projects of their choice.

The impacts of this sustainable trade model are evident within Esquires supply chain. For example, when you buy Esquires Equatorial coffee, you’re delivering a much needed positive impact to producers in four cooperatives. In the Oromia cooperative, the benefits producers have seen include 15 school and 43 classrooms as well as training in organic farming techniques. Additionally, some of the benefits seen in CECOVASA cooperative in Peru include the installation of a cupping laboratory and a women’s leadership programme.

This Fairtrade Fortnight, we urge you to put Fairtrade in your break and help us spread the word. Together we can amplify the voices of marginalised farmers and ensure they receive a fair deal for their work.

What you may not already know is that the person behind the counter is also likely to be the owner of the business. Our franchisees are local businessmen and women with a vested interest in making their Esquires Coffee house the hub of their local community. They come from a number of different backgrounds from being ex-teachers, dental nurses, graduates, chefs etc. etc.

Franchisee Nadia is the proud owner of Esquires Coffee in Bromley, Intu Shopping Centre. Nadia is a mum of two, former dental nurse and motor racing enthusiast. Her favourite Esquires drink is a cappuccino which fuels her days’ serving her lovely customers.

Franchisee Steven owns both the Esquires Coffee houses in Coventry. Steven is Esquires youngest franchisee ever taking on the business not long after graduating from Sheffield University. Steven loves being able to serve his customers eyebrow-raisingly good Fairtrade and organic coffee. When Steven isn’t busy running his two stores you can find him training for mammoth cycling charity events.

Esquires nominated for a ‘Sammie’ Award!

Esquires Coffee are pleased to announce that we have been nominated for a ‘Sammie’ award. The ‘Oscars’ of the sandwich industry in case you didn’t know! Esquires have been nominated in ‘The Cafe Sandwich Retailer’ category, up against some of the giants in the high street coffee market, such as Pret, Costa Fesco and Benugo.

The ‘Sammies’ otherwise known as ‘The British Sandwich Industry Awards’ celebrate the best in the British Sandwich industry. The Cafe Sandwich retailer Award that Esquires have been nominated for is designed to recognise the importance of sandwich sales in coffee shops.

The Esquires sandwich range was judged on our level of innovation, quality and sales success achieved in relation to sandwiches, product range, presentation and emphasis on the category.

Being nominated in this category, against such tough competition, is a great accomplishment for Esquires. The nomination also comes not long after we re-vamped our range and packaging.

Esquires Supports UK Coffee Week 2016

Esquires Coffee are supporting UK Coffee Week this year by hosting fundraisers in each of our 25 stores. We’ll be inviting our customers to ‘guess the amount of organic, Fairtrade coffee beans in the jar’ for the chance to win a month’s free coffee! At Esquires we are already a strong supporter of Project Waterfall, which works to bring clean safe water and sanitation to coffee growing communities in third world countries. Esquires donate 10p from the sale of every bottle of our mineral water to Project Waterfall. In 2015 the brand managed to raise £4305.60 and hope to raise even more during UK Coffee week.
